Ground Cashews

Organic
Burkina Faso

Some cashew nuts or cashew pieces are stained or slightly wrinkled. Though this doesn’t affect their taste, we can’t export them. We process these cashews into a kind of flour, which is called “mugu” in the local language.

Our organic cashews come from around 3,000 family farmers in the Hauts-Bassins, Sud-Ouest, Cascades and Centre-Ouest regions of Burkina Faso. The families deliver their raw cashews directly to gebana Burkina Faso in Bobo-Dioulasso, where they are shelled, peeled, sorted, and packaged on site in our own factory.

The complete processing in Bobo-Dioulasso creates jobs and opportunities in a country where hardly anyone else is investing. We have been there since 2001, and our own factory opened its doors in 2006. Since 2021, we have been building a new, larger factory that will create 1000 new jobs. The opening is planned for early summer 2025.

By processing locally, we avoid unnecessary transport and the transfer of value creation to Vietnam, where the majority of West African cashews are currently processed.

Use & preparation

Storage & shelf life

Cashew flour can only be kept for a few months. It’s important to protect the flour from moisture and air. Ideally, transfer the flour into sealable jars or airtight plastic containers and consume it quickly. Alternatively, you can freeze the flour in airtight packaging and store it for longer. Let the frozen flour thaw before use.

BARRO DOSSOU

FARMER FROM TOUSSIANA, BURKINA FASO

In another life, I would have loved to be a blacksmith!

"I'm the head of a family of two wives and nine children," says Barro Dossou. "If the yields are high, you can earn a good income from farming. This is very important to me because I want to secure my children's future. I use the money to build houses that I could also rent out if necessary." The farmer would like to have more influence on the price of his goods. "The price of my products is set by the buyers. But I would also like to have a say."

Background

We're building a factory!

We need more space to process our cashews and mangos in Burkina Faso. Follow our progress on 'La Belle Usine' here.
